SIMPLE DONUT CHUCK
Need access to the foot of an open bowl? Here's a simple jig to do the job.
Construction should be self-explanatory from the photos. I've seen more elaborate jigs but this bare-bones version is easy to build and suits my needs. Size can be whatever you require for your turning style.
To avoid knuckle-busters be sure to keep the bolt heads on the front as flush to the donut as possible. If you have a thick enough donut you might even consider recessing them.
You might also consider putting a pad on the back plate to protect the rim of your bowl. I choose not to. Sandwiching the bowl between two padded surfaces could allow the piece to move a smidge. With light cuts I have yet to mar a rim. Your mileage may vary.
